What Is GEO, and Why Should a Local Business Care?

Short answer: So what is GEO? Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the work of making your business easy for AI assistants to understand, trust and mention accurately. When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity "Who is a reliable [your service] in Toronto?", GEO is about improving the chance that the answer is correct and includes you.

Why this matters now

Some customers now ask an assistant instead of scrolling through search results. The answer they get often names only a few businesses, and can get details wrong. Being one of the few named is a different problem from ranking on page one.

What is GEO, and how is it different from SEO?

SEO GEO
Goal Rank a page in a list of links Be understood and cited inside an AI-written answer
Where it shows Google and Bing results ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews
What matters most Keywords, links, page experience Clear facts, consistent information across the web, structured data, trusted third-party mentions
How you measure it Rankings, traffic How often, how accurately and in what context AI mentions you

They are not opposites. A fast, well-organized, crawlable website helps both. GEO adds a focus on stating facts plainly and keeping them consistent everywhere your business appears.

What AI assistants look for

Nobody outside the AI companies knows exactly how any assistant chooses what to say, and it changes over time. In practice, these things consistently help:

  1. Clear statements. Who you are, what you offer, where you work, who you serve, and roughly what it costs.
  2. Consistency. The same name, address area, phone number and service list on your site, Google Business Profile, directories and social pages.
  3. Structure. Headings, short sections, tables and question-and-answer content that are easy to lift into an answer.
  4. Machine-readable data. Schema markup that labels your business details.
  5. Independent mentions. Reviews, directory listings and articles from sources other than you.
  6. Access. AI crawlers are not blocked from reading your pages.

What GEO cannot do

  • It cannot guarantee that any assistant will recommend you. Anyone who promises that is guessing.
  • It does not replace good service and real customer reviews.
  • It is not a one-time job. Assistants and sources change, so you check regularly.

Where to start

  1. Find out how AI describes you today. See our 15-minute self-check guide.
  2. Fix the basics: accurate business details, a clear services page, an FAQ.
  3. Make sure your information matches across the web.

FAQ

Is GEO the same as SEO? No. They overlap, and good SEO groundwork helps GEO, but the goal and the way you measure success are different.

Do I need GEO if I am a small local business? If customers in your area ask AI assistants for recommendations, it is worth making sure the answers about you are accurate. You do not need to start big.

How long does GEO take to work? It varies by assistant and by what needs fixing. Technical fixes tend to be picked up sooner; reputation and mentions take longer.
